If you’re a Virginia resident looking for a grounded, compassionate therapist with decades of experience, Kate welcomes you into this space of healing and discovery.

The Counseling Approach

Kate’s counseling services are grounded in deep psychological care, with a focus on resolving past experiences that continue to shape current emotional health. As a trauma expert with decades of experience, she works with clients navigating mental health diagnoses such as anxiety, depression, trauma-related disorders, and attachment wounds. Counseling is not the same as coaching or consulting. Counseling is clinical, diagnostic-based therapy that supports healing at the root.

Kate offers integrative, trauma-informed treatment for individuals, children, and families, combining traditional psychotherapy with modalities like Somatic Experiencing®, the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP), and the Rest & Restore Protocol (RRP). Her work also includes comprehensive mental health assessments and treatment planning, especially for families dealing with complex emotional or developmental needs.

When working with children or adolescents, Kate collaborates closely with schools, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, and other para-professionals to create a holistic support network. She is particularly skilled at helping families regulate as a system, bringing nervous system awareness, emotional insight, and practical strategies into alignment.

Please note: Kate’s counseling services are private pay only and out-of-network with insurance providers. All services are offered on a self-pay basis.

How Counseling Is Different from Coaching or Consulting

It’s important to choose the right type of support based on your goals, needs, and where you are in your healing journey. While Kate offers both counseling and consulting services, they are distinct in purpose, process, and scope. Below is a helpful comparison to clarify what counseling offers and how it differs from coaching or consulting.

Counseling services are available only to residents of Virginia and are provided under Kate’s licensure as a professional counselor. All services are private pay and out-of-network with insurance providers.

Kate offers multiple forms of support, and it’s important to understand which service is right for your needs. Counseling is distinct from her consulting or coaching work in the following ways:

  • Focused on the past: Counseling addresses unresolved psychological wounds and developmental trauma
  • Rooted in diagnosis: Counseling involves formal assessment, diagnostic formulation, and treatment planning
  • Designed for mental health concerns: Such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and family system challenges
  • Includes clinical tools and trauma-informed care: Delivered by a licensed professional
  • Integrative but clinical: Incorporates SSP, RRP, and somatic modalities within a licensed therapy context
  • Often includes collaboration: With psychiatrists, schools, and other mental health professionals
  • Not future-planning or strategy-based: Unlike coaching or consulting, which often focus on present or future decision-making
